BACKGROUND
This was a project I undertook when I was completing my internship at Travelling Tradies. The owner of VOX BOOTHS also ran Travelling Tradies and he assigned me to this new venture. The business builds customised phone booths for office spaces. They believe that one size does not fit all and needed a brand that reflected their message. As the business was expanding, branding was required so that potential clients could better understand their product.
BRAINSTORMING
I usually like to start my design process by brainstorming keywords that I thought embodied the brand. I also created some initial sketches of ideas for logos and marquees that reflected the keywords developed.

FIRST ITERATION
When I presented my first idea to the marketing manager of VOX BOOTHS they gave me the feedback that it was looked ‘professional’. This was not the brand the business wanted to embody. The approach that they take in building their phone booths is very relaxed, playful and creative and they needed a brand that encapsulated this spirit.

IDEATIONS
After the feedback session, I gained a better appreciation of the type of branding the business desired and I went back to generating more ideas that better reflected the business. I increased the brightness of the colours and experimented with different shapes and positioning of the text to create more whimsical designs.

OUTCOME
The final outcome from this project were new brand guidelines for VOX BOOTHS that were applied to business cards and brochures. After VOX BOOTHS visited a client, a print version of the brochure was to be left with clients to explain their business idea. A digital version of the brochure was used on the VOX BOOTH website or sent out as a PDF to prospective clients.

REFLECTION
The main challenge of this project was my initial lack of knowledge. I was the only designer working on the project, so if I did not know how to do something I had to figure it out on my own. I had to do a lot of research to develop the brand guidelines and print version of the brochure, as I had never completed anything like this before. Using my prior design knowledge, however, it was easy to adapt my skills to these new mediums.
Key Takeaways
Create multiple ideas to show client – Initially I made the mistake of only developing one of my ideas for the brand. To get a better idea of what direction the client wants for their brand, it would be beneficial to develop multiple design concepts and let them choose which one they like.
Have an in-depth talk with client at the start of the design process – the reason why my initial idea was rejected was because it did not reflect the businesses brand. This was because I had minimal knowledge of the business and did not fully understand what type of brand they wanted to embody.
